Ammonites were coil-shelled cephalopods, that became extinct around 66 million years ago. They are closely related to our octopus, cuttlefish and squid. The name comes from the spiral shape of the shell, thought to resemble the horn of a ram, the name derived from the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing rams’ horns. Originally, people thought that ammonites were coiled-up fossilised snakes.
