NOTES: Pasted to the back of this picture is a letter from the National Portrait Gallery, dated 30th November 1999. A section of the letter reads 'The uniform and ornament on the back of the chair possibly imply foreign royalty and on this basis the closest likeness I can find is Alfonso XIII of Spain [...] You will notice from the enclosed biographical information, that Alfonso's eldest son and heir was born in 1907 and I wonder therefore whether this birth may be the subject of the caricature?'
