The work is a preparatory drawing for Procaccini’s oil painting of Rebecca at the Well in the Santa Maria di Canepanova Pavia, Lombardy. This was one of two canvasses completed (the other being Mary, sister of Moses) by Procaccini between 1620 and 1623 as part of the cycle of eight depicting Old Testament biblical heroines. The other six works were completed by four other artists; Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574-1625), Alessandro Tiarini (1577-1668) and Guglielmo Caccia called il Moncalvo (1568-1625).
