NEW ZEALAND VIEWS, c.1880s. Albumen prints (113), depicting an interesting variety of New Zealand views, with a small selection of Tonga and Samoa subjects, all but three measuring approx. 14.5 x 20cm, most mounted two per page, recto & verso, the majority with Burton Brothers' studio credit, title, and number within the negative. Housed in red morocoo boards, upper cover lost, with binding loss and some detached pages. New Zealand subjects include views of The Cave and Nine Mile Ferry at Buller Gorge; aerial views of Wellington; views of the Wanganui River, including Taherepokiore Rapid and Kakani Falls; a village scene in Koroniti; King Tawhiao's Whare Puni in Te Kuiti; a Maori Tomb; Maori canoe prow studies; a fine portrait of Chief Te Hau hau at Te Kuiti, alongside another portrait of Chief Te Heu Heu at Tokaanu; a group portrait of femal Tookanu Natives; Blakes Hotel in Tokaanu; views of Taupo Lake and bathing holes; a family portrait at Waihi; Lofley's Baths, the Steam Hammer, Witche's Cauldron, Devil's Pitch Pot, and Little Crows Nest near Taupo; the Wairakei Geyser; Huka Falls; Karapiti Blowhole; the active volcano at Ngaruhoe, including a view of the interior crater; Ruapehu; Ketetahi Steam Holes, Tongariro; a geyser at Whatapoko; Wairakei; the Pink Porridge Pot; Grierson's Hotel; the geyser and bathing holes at Whakarewarewa; a study of a rubbing nose greeting; Oruawhata; Tikitere; various geysers and mud volcanos; the Sunken Pah and carved houses at Ohinemutu; White Terrace and its Hot Water Basins; Pink Terrace; The Steaming Hill and Boiling Cauldron; a fine portrait of Aporo and Ngareta at Wairoa; views of Lake Tarawera and Mount Tarawera; two views of the post-eruption landscape at Tikitapu, 10 June 1886; Auckland from Mount Eden; survey and street views of Auckland.

Further views include: landscapes and group portraits in Tongatabu, including Tijbou College; a portrait of Princess Anaziene, granddaughter of King George of Tonga; the Wesleyan Church; the King's Palace and Harbour at Vavau, Tonga; a Samoan House at Apia; portraits of local Samoan villagers, including one view of two Samoan girls playing cards; and a large view of Apia harbour.
