A CARVED AND PIERCED SANDALWOOD LIDDED BOX
Possibly Ceylon, Sri Lanka, 19th century

Of rectangular shape, surmounted by a domed lid of hemispherical shape, every panel intricately and finely carved and pierced with a variety of vegetal and animal decorations, the lid featuring a central roundel with Baby Krishna dancing on the Snake Demon Kaliya, flanked by two griffins, the other panels featuring a similar composition to the lid with auspicious animals like a Hamsa duck, a spotted deer, a peacock and an elephant, 8cm x 22cm x 8.5cm.
