PROVENANCE:
Commissioned by Margaret, Duchess of Argyll

Herbert James Gunn, associated with the Newlyn School and the Glasgow Boys. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later at the Edinburgh College of Art. In his early career, Gunn painted in a realist style, influenced by the Glasgow School and the Scottish Colourists. However, he later adopted a more impressionistic approach, using loose brushwork and vibrant colors to capture the essence of his subjects.

Gunn's portraits were particularly notable, and he received commissions from prominent individuals and members of the British royal family. His portraits were known for their sensitivity and capturing the character and personality of the sitter.

Gunn exhibited extensively in galleries and institutions, including the Royal Academy of Arts, where he was elected as a member (R.A.) in 1939. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (R.P.).
