Wilhelm Gimmi, received his artistic training at the Zurich School of Applied Arts and later studied under Ferdinand Hodler, a renowned Swiss painter.

Gimmi's early works were influenced by Hodler's style, characterised by a strong emphasis on form and colour. He developed his own distinctive approach, combining elements of realism and post-impressionism as can be seen in the present portrait.
