A SINO-ISLAMIC ORIENTALIST POTTERY VASE WITH GILT BRONZE MOUNTS
Possibly Longwy, North-Eastern France, late 19th century

A SINO-ISLAMIC ORIENTALIST POTTERY VASE WITH GILT BRONZE MOUNTS
Possibly Longwy, North-Eastern France, late 19th century

Of baluster-like shape, with sloping shoulders rising to a straight cylindrical neck, the body moulded with a central band of trefoil arches alternately filled with stylised tulip and lotus flowers and a gridwork of single leaves with serrated edges, on the base and neck horizontal friezes of floral and vegetal sprays interspersed between roundels with Arabic inscriptions repeating the name of God and the Prophet, underglaze painted in pink, green, turquoise, cobalt blue and purple, with yellow used on the raised outline, the vase with Western gilt bronze mounts around the rim and to the base, 25.2cm high.

The style and design of this vase are reminiscent of Longwy ceramics, whose homonymous centre of production has been active since the end of the 17th century. This French manufacture characterised itself for the use of the so-called Émaux de Longwy, a unique tradition of laying polychrome enamelled cloisonné pigments on top of ceramic vessels, where patterns had been previously carved in high relief. The main source of inspiration for both the cloisonné technique and the motifs implemented in Longwy ceramics were Asian (and occasionally, Islamic) wares, which provides an explanation for the artistic pastiche that can be observed in our lot.
