UENO HIKOMA (1838-1904)
PANORAMAM OF SHANGHAI, 1893.
Silver print panorama, printed early 20th century, in four joined parts, flush-mounted onto period card with linen tape joints, image meauring 205 x 1065mm, overall measuring 280 x 1160mm, printed early 20th century.
In 1891, the accomplished Japanese photographer Ueno Hikoma opened studio branches in Shanghai and Hong Kong (See Bennett, Photography in Japan, 73-76). According to Dennis George Crow, "This panorama shows the Whangpoo and the Bund with Pootung (Pudong) in the background. It can be dated to early 1893, because the third section shows the new Customs House tower under construction, which was completed in mid-1893. The panorama was taken from the scaffolding on the newly built Trinity Church steeple which was the tallest structure in Shanghai until well into the twentieth century." (Crow, Old Shanghai's Bund, Earnshaw Books: 2012. p.69-70).
