A SIGNED FRENCH POLYCHROME-PATINATED BRONZE FIGURE OF THE ETHIOPIAN PRINCESS, AIDA
France, ca. 1890 - 1900, signed Gaston Leroux (French, 1854 - 1942)
The polychrome-patinated cast bronze figure of Aida, the Ethiopian princess held captive in Ancient Egypt in love with the Pharaoh's General Radames, seated upon a derelict statue of a Pharaoh's head, wearing a loose striped caftan open on her chest and a plain handkerchief over her head, her forehead embellished with a tight band with coins and bejewelled pendants, holding a tambourine in her left hand with nielloed coat of arms and royal insignias on the sides, with typical bronze, reddish brown and green patina, the statue cast after the 1870 model by the French sculptor Gaston Veuvenot Leroux "Aïda, A Femme Au Tambourin Assise Sur Une Tete De Sphinx", signed Gaston Leroux on the base, 74cm high.
