German-born artist and ethnologist Richard Karlovich Zommer studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, receiving several awards, before leaving for Asia at some point in the early 1890s.

Travelling extensively, Zommer produced a large body of truthful portraits and landscapes, providing ethnographic insight into the cultures and lands of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Turkey and Georgia, where he lived and walked the majority of the Caucasus mountains.
