1926 was a pivotal year in the history of watch-making thanks to the creation of one of the most iconic watch models: the Cushion Oyster. In that year, Wilsdorf arranged for C.R. Spillman SA to acquire the patent of a screw-down back (to see a watch with this case, please refer to lot 69 and 73 in this sale), which had been patented earlier that year by Paul Perregaux and George Perret. The screw-down back consisted in having the bezel and back case tightly screwed together into the main case against soft lead seals. After a decade of experimentation, the first real hermetic and water-resistant watch was born and it was presented in an octagonal and a cushion-shaped case 28mm for ladies and 32mm for men. Since then, the model's design has barely changed proving its efficiency over a period of almost 100 years.
