This summer silver sale contains the first part of a private London collection of Anglo - Indian silver. The collection includes fifteen lots from the famous workshop of Oomersi Mawji. These finely worked examples from Bhuj, the capital of Cutch, are admired for their beauty and accrue global interest as exemplary objects of Indian craftmanship.
Unusually, this sale also features examples of ecclesiastical silver, in the form of altar candlesticks.; a set of four from 18th century Augsburg, then a pair of 17th century examples from Utrecht. The British section has a variety of coconut cups, with a William III cup with cut-card work being the earliest example. Among the most sculptural pieces are a pair of Garrard bowls or sauce tureens each adorned with mythical drakes. These potentially being modelled by Edmund Cotterill, Garrard’s chief designer in the 1840s and 50’s.
