The story behind the face...

Next week, on Tuesday 21st July at 12 noon we are holding a sale of
Stamps, Coins and Banknotesfollowed by the General sale.

Maria I (17 December 1734 – 20 March 1816) was Queen of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. She was known as Maria the Pious in Portugal, but Maria the Mad in Brazil! So what was the truth, the real story behind the face?

Well in our Stamps, Coins and Banknotes sale on 21st July, lot no. 159 may help you decide on the answer. It is a Brazilian 1793 gold 6400 reis coin with a bust of Maria facing right with 'R' under bust, Rio Mint, obverse with crowned shield with five smaller shields within a central cartouche, an extremely nice coin, good tone and lustre, EF-UN. Since it's a Brazilian coin, she should look a little mad...

The sale also includes a huge  range of stamps, including some comprehensive collections, and a worldwide range of banknotes and commemorative medallions covering everything from Royal visits and birthdays to Moon landings, through sporting events including the 2012 Olympics.

The catalogue is online now, and will also include the lots for the general sale which will follow the specialist sale.

This week the inaugural sale of Designer Handbags and Fashion was a great success, with a  busy saleroom and some fabulous individual results.

Our start lot was no. 6, a large red Chanel classic flap bag c.2011, made of quilted calf leather with chrome hardware. It achieved £2,520 incl. buyers’ premium.

We were also very pleased with a couple of rare Louis Vuitton bags – an exotic skin Waltz Macha bag from the 2005 fall/winter runway sold for £1,920 incl. buyers’ premium whilst an alligator Mirage Griet bag from the 2007 fall/winter runway beat it by reaching £2,040 incl. buyers’ premium.

Due to the success and popularity of this sale we have decided to add an additional one to the calendar on Tuesday 15th September.

Coming up on the 28th July we are looking forward to the Jewellery and Watches sale. As usual we have some great pieces in the catalogue for this popular sale.

This will be the last sale of July, before we start our August Summer series of General Sales - at the new earlier start time of 11am!.

Don't forget we now publish the sale results on our website each week.

We accept consignments up to 3 weeks before each Specialist sale,
and every week for our General sales.
Please note, from August 4th all of our Tuesday sales will start at 11am.

Check the sale calendar for more details.
