Auction: Old Masters Winter Edition, including Drawings & Watercolours from the Collection of a Connoisseur
The Old Masters Winter Edition at Chiswick Auctions features an important private collection of drawings and watercolours from a renowned connoisseur.
The collection of predominantly English 18th and 19th century drawings and watercolours was formed over 60 years by a private collector who searched the art market from Bermondsey to Bond Street and the Marché aux Puces to Manhattan. This connoisseur was passionate about collecting watercolours, drawings and prints and he had an interesting and diverse eye. His collections were mostly kept at home carefully stored in boxes with occasional outings for appraisal and research. Each item was special to him and very few ever reached the open market.
Highlights from the collection include a previously unrecorded graphite study taken from life at Berne by Richard Parkes Bonington which has been verified by the leading expert Patrick Noon. As with the Cyril Fry sale, most of the lots are unframed but nearly all were beautifully mounted and stored carefully. Many of the lots are offered in folders that have been carefully constructed according to theme or artist. There are examples by William Henry Hunt, Edward Lear, Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, William Samuel Howitt, John Varley and Peter De Wint to name just a few artists. The sale offers a wonderful opportunity for collectors, new and seasoned to find works that have been treasured and beautifully preserved.
The family hope the sale will provide a memorial to a fanatical but much appreciated collector and aesthete.
