Elgar (Edward)

Elgar (Edward)

Two autograph letters signed ('Edward Elgar') to his music publisher Alfred Littleton, the first reading "I have had a slight chill and have been laying low. Edwards sent me some simple words for the M.T. I am sending him a setting direct, but he will of course consult you about it. The setting is very simple, the words would not stand elaboration, but it may be too simple for your requirements. I have received an amended version of the marching song and will report progress shortly" and adding "I have received a long letter from Mr. Vogt (Toronto) about a possible visit for me to Canada. I have asked him to write to Gray who knows what is going on and if it could be managed in conjunction with other things"; the second letter says "I promised Beale I would let him know as to an oratorio - the final one of the series- for the next Birmingham festival. I have today written definitely and finally to give up the idea. The surroundings here are noisy...and I think I shall not write anything at all under the circumstances. In any case, I am sadly disappointed with the commercial results of the last oratorio and for the sake of my people, must not waste more time in attempting to write high 'felt' music. I fear you will be sorry but I have thought it seriously over and have decided"; seven pages, minor yellowing overall, 4to, Via Gregoriana 38, Rome, 2-3 December 1907.
