William Linton spent his childhood in Windermere where he continued to visit throughout his life. His artistic talent began when he started to copy works by the French painter and etcher, Claude Gellee (1600-1682), and landscape painter Richard Wilson (1714-1782). By the year 1817 Linton had moved to London and had begun exhibiting works at the British Institution and the Royal Academy.
