'CUSTOMS AND FASHION IN THE LEVANT': PORTRAIT OF AN ARMENIAN LADY
Possibly France or Istanbul, Ottoman Turkey, 18th - 19th century

Opaque pigments, ink and pencil on wove paper, the vertical composition possibly a study of local fashion and traditions in the Ottoman Empire, portraying an Armenian lady with a concealing white headscarf, leaving out only her eyes, wearing a long blue coat and red leather pointed boots, below the portrait a handwritten French note in sepia ink Femme Armeniene, within brown rules, mounted, glazed and framed, the painting 22cm x 15cm excluding the frame.

Provenance: Bonhams, London, 8 April 2014, part of lot 133.
