Xie Zhiliu was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in 1910. He grew up in a scholarly family and was introduced to traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy at an early age. In 1927, he entered the Shanghai School of Fine Arts, where he studied under renowned artists like Liu Haisu and Wu Dayu. He later studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he was taught by Xu Beihong and Qi Baishi.

During his long career, Xie Zhiliu became known for his exquisite paintings of landscapes, flowers, and birds, as well as for his mastery of calligraphy. He also wrote extensively on Chinese art history and was a prominent collector and connoisseur of traditional Chinese art.

He was particularly renowned for his skill in the "gongbi" style of painting, which involves precise and detailed brushwork. His works are held in high esteem both in China and internationally and are widely collected by museums and art lovers around the world.

In addition to his contributions to the world of art, Xie Zhiliu was also known for his efforts to preserve traditional Chinese culture.
