A mid-19th century Indian Colonial silver tankard, Calcutta dated 1865 by Charles Nephew and Co (active 1848-70)
Of baluster form upon a spreading circular foot. The leaf capped double C scroll handle, terminating in a heart shaped terminal, leading to a hinged double domed lid surmounted by a detachable Victorian cast finial formed as a convolvulus upon a leafy calyx, London by Daniel and Charles Houle. The body with embossed decoration of a bunch of roses to one side and a bunch of dog roses to the other side, each reserved with foliate C scrolls forming a central cartouche. The cartouche engraved with a presentation inscription reading “won by W. G. Probyn, Rampore Rifle Meeting December 1865”, heightened with scrolls. The lid with a chased border of segments with roundels, the upper section with embossed roses. Gilt interior. Stamped to the underside Nephew & Co and then Charles overstriking itself in reverse.
