Sold with a letter from Sir Aston Webb to Sir David Murray, dated 5 July 1921

Eminent architect Sir Aston Webb (1849-1930) designed the principal facade of Buckingham Palace and the main building of the Victoria & Albert Museum, among other major works around Britain, many of them in partnership with Ingress Bell. The Scottish landscape painter Sir David Murray (1849-1933) was a fellow Royal Academician and direct contemporary of Bell's. Orpen, a generation younger than both Bell and Murray, was made a Royal Academician after the First World War, and drew the present work when Bell was its President (1919 to 1924).
