AN HISPANO-MORESQUE REVIVAL COPPER-LUSTRE POTTERY CHARGER
Attributed to Ulisse Cantagalli, Florence, Italy, mid to late 19th century

Of typical shallow rounded shape, resting on a short circular foot, rising to an everted moulded rim with raised oblong ridges filled with star roundels, floral designs, abstract motifs and fish-scale pattern, painted in copper lustre against a white ground, the basin's centre raised with a boss decorated with the Rod of Asclepius, surrounded by a band of pseudo-calligraphy and ridges similar to the rim, the cavetto with further fish-scale pattern and a continuous band of flower sprays, the exterior decorated with concentric circles and stylised vegetal roundels, the base with a rosette and marked with a cobalt blue rooster (maker's stamp), 42cm diam.
