λ A MICRO-MOSAIC KHATAMKARI LIDDED CASKET
Iran, late 19th - early 20th century
Of rectangular shape, resting on a flat plain wooden base, with a raised, casket-shaped lid, the exterior clad in bone, coloured woods, and brass-inlaid micro-mosaic work (khatamkari), on each side the central rectangular panel decorated with cusped cartouches filled with khatamkari hexagonal star-shaped roundels, the same decoration and geometric, fretwork and chequered bands repeated to the borders of each panel, the lid with similar motifs and a band of brass-inlaid rosette roundels, the edges inlaid in ivory, the wooden interior painted in red and green, 19cm x 31cm x 18cm.
