An early 19th century Indian colonial silver covered cup, Calcutta dated 1837 by Hamilton and Co

Of campana form upon a spreading circular foot with a lobed centre and am acanthus lead knop. The lid of lobed domed form with a cast acanthus leaf edge, all surmounted by a detachable figure of a standing man, his hat in his right hand and his left upon an anchor with coiled rope to the side, the terrace modelled as flagstones. The lower section of the lobed body with embossed decoration of flower heads of alternating carnations and roses, with leafy surrounds, repeated on the foot with thistles alternating with rose. Engraved to the side with a presentation inscription reading “Canton Regatta Club, Wherry Cup won by Mr Thompsons Bee, 11th July 1837”. Gilt interior. Marked to the edge of the foot with H&Co, Elephant, Roman capital A and lotus tally mark.

A butter cooler with an inscription dated 1838 by Hamilton with the same but not identical form of finial is illustrated Wilkinson W., Indian Colonial Silver – European Silversmiths in India and their marks (1790-1860), (1973), London: W.R.T. Wilkinson, p. 60.

In 1837 the Canton Regatta Club was founded. The club disappeared in the First Opium War, but after the war, in 1844, former members recreated it, apparently as the Canton Rowing Club.
