Iran, late 17th - early 18th century
Of circular shape with reinforced scalloped rim, the central medallion replicating the shape of the outer rim and enhanced with a scalloped brass crown, the steel plaque pierced with calligraphy invoking the help of the Shi'a Imam 'Ali in the centre and stylised scrolling vines in the middle ground, possibly once part of the decorative program of a processional standard ('alam), a piece of furniture or a door, 19cm diam.
