An interesting George III sterling silver hot water or coffee pot, London 1786 by John Wakelin & William Taylor (reg. 25 Sep 1776)

Of tapering cylindrical form with moulded rims, the hinged lid with a beaded rim and a dished and domed centre surmounted by a knop finial. The plain spout opposite a later loop handle, London pre-1890 possibly by Daniel & John Wellby, with moulding and upturned thumbpiece and ivory insulators. Engraved to the side with traces of a quartered coat of arms within a shield surmounted by a crest of a wolf’s head erased sable bezanty fire issuing from its mouth, all reserved within a bright cut border. Fully marked underneath and part-marked to lid, and handle, also with scratch weight underneath 23:2.

For Edward Miller Mundy (18th October 1750 - 18th October 1822), of Shipley Hall, near Ilkeston in the County of Derbyshire. Edward was the only son of Edward Mundy (1706-1767) and his wife, Hester Miller (c.1714-1767), the daughter and heiress of Colonel Humphrey Miller (d.c.1716) of Shipley Hall. He married three times. Firstly, to Frances Meynell (died 28th October 1783), the daughter and co-heiress of Godfrey Meynell, of Yeldersley in the County of Derbyshire; secondly, on the 14th January 1788 to Georgiana (died 29th June 1789), the daughter and eventual coheiress of Colonel Evelyn Chadwick, of West Leake in the County of Nottinghamshire and widow of Thomas Willoughby, the 4th Baron Middleton and thirdly, on the 19th October 1811 to Catherine Coffin, the daughter of Nathaniel Coffin of Bristol in the County of Gloucestershire and widow of Richard Barwell, of Stansted Park in the County of Sussex.

He was MP for Derbyshire from 1783 until his death 39 years later. Edward’s three marriages produced six sons and two daughters, his daughter Georgina became the 4th Duchess of Newcastle-under-Lyme, his other daughter Frances married the son of the 3rd Duke of Grafton.

Four sauce tureens of 1799 by John Wakelin and Robert Garrard bearing the arms of Edward Miller Mundy (1774-1834) and Nelly Barton, son of the above, was sold Christie’s London, 10 June 2008, Lot 205 (£5,000 incl. premium)

A basket; same date, maker and arms as above, sold Christie’s London, 10 June 2008, Lot 206 (£13,750 incl. premium)

An Abercorn pattern extensive tea and coffee service of 1849-54 by John Samuel Hunt with the crest of Alfred Miller-Mundy (1809-1877) grandson of the above was sold Christie’s 10 June 2008, Lot 202-4.
