The present work is a copy after Bonnington's original watercolour, The Shrine with two Pilgrims, which was in the collection of Edward Vernon Utterson (1777-1856), by 1829. It is likely that the source of this copy was the 1830 lithograph by J.D. Harding after Bonnington's original watercolour. Copies after Harding's lithographs were quite common.
