A rare George II Irish sterling silver sugar bowl base, Dublin no date letter circa 1740 by Andrew Goodwin (free 1730, died 1787)
Of hemispherical form with moulded edge the splayed foot with incised rings. Engraved mirror monogram JCS in flourished cursive script. Marked to side with maker’s mark, Hibernia and town mark. Engraved initials underneath H.S in Roman script and scratch weight 13”13”0.

Weight – 228 grams / 7.33 ozt
Goodwin working from Skinner Row, apprenticed to Henry Daniel 1722, free 1730, master 1746/7 and elected Common Council City of Dublin 1749.
A larger bowl of 16.5 cm diameter by Goodwin was sold Sotheby’s New York, 20 Oct 2009, Lot 249 ($5,625 incl. premium)
A fluted a lion mask sugar bowl by Gladwin was sold Christie’s New York, 11 April 2003, Lot 266 ($7,170 incl. premium)
