TWO INDIAN ALBUM PAGES WITH ENCAMPMENT SCENES
Provincial School, Rajasthan, North-Western India, late 19th century

Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, each page presenting a vertical composition depicting lively encampment scenes by a river, the first with two young, white-clad princes in conversation in the middle ground, and attendants carrying long swords moving a pack of horses through the tents, the latter with an elephant royal procession in the foreground with a king or emperor escorted by his attendants, in the background several colourful tents, the largest occupied by a princess being fanned with a morchal (peacock whisk) by her attendant, both compositions pasted onto 20th-century polychrome-painted and gilt album borders on cream cardboard, featuring scrolling vegetal meanders with red and blue flowers, the reverse plain, each 34.2cm x 24.3cm.
