A HELLENISTIC KNUCKLEBONE Circa 2nd - 1st Century B.C. The bone gaming piece, probably from the ankle or hock of a sheep, with a pale green patina, the game would have been played in a similar fashion to today's game of jacks with the pieces thrown up and caught on the back of the hand, 1.7cm long, Literature: A later bronze version is illustrated in M. Comstock & C. Vermeule, 'Greek, Etruscan and Roman Bronzes in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston' (Boston,1971) no 639. Provenance: UK private collection.
