In 1868-1869 a team of Royal Engineers under the leadership of Captain (later Sir) Charles Wilson was sent to make a survey of the Peninsula of Sinai for the Ordnance Survey. During the expedition to Sinai at least 264 listed photographs were taken by Colour Sergeant James MacDonald R.E. One hundred and fifty were published in three volumes of the official account of the survey.
