Zhang Daqian was born in 1899 in Sichuan province during the final years of the Qing Dynasty. Born into an artistic family, he was first taught to paint by his mother and older siblings. He later spent a short time as a novice in a Buddhist monastery in order to escape a pre-arranged marriage, and it was here the name Daqian was given to him. In 1917 he left for Japan to study weaving and textile dying in Kyoto. He further his studies in painting and calligraphy under the tutelage of Zeng Xi (1861-1930) and Li Ruiqing (1867-1920), and personally studied the ‘individualist’ artists Shitao (1642-ca.1710) and Bada Shanren (ca. 1626-1705), both of the latter being yimin artists active soon after the fall of the Ming Dynasty.
Like many other Chinese artists born in the late-19th century, the political turmoil and social upheaval that defined the following decades provided the young artist with both challenges and opportunities. Zhang Daqian was renowned for mastering many painting techniques, and his oeuvre included detailed portraits and dramatic, expressive ink-splashed landscapes. Straddling the intersection between traditional Chinese painting techniques and more-radical aesthetic expressions, Zhang Daqian is regarded as one of China's most important artists.
