Hare Regarding the Moon, ink and colour on silk, bearing a collector’s seals of Wang Ao (1450 – 1524), Yang Xunji (1456 – 1544), five of Xiang Yuanbian (1525 – 1590), Xing Dong (1551 – 1612), two of Geng Zhaozhong (1640 – 1686), Wang Xuling (1642 – 1725), Wang Shan (1645 – 1728) and Wang Yinjia (1892 – 1949), Chinese hanging scroll painting, 89.5 x 36cm.

Provenance: from a New York private collection.

This work appears to be the preparatory small scale sketch for a monumental work of identical subject matter by the Ming Dynasty artist Tang Cheng measuring 205 by 105cm and currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The seals indicate the esteemed pedigree of collectors through whose hands the paintings have passed.
