Executed in 1982, Piper's interest in Suffolk churches dated back at least to the 1950s, when he had worked on his set of prints of 'Three Suffolk Towers' - the church towers of Laxfield, Walberswick and Stoke-by-Nayland. Piper drew them while staying at Aldeburgh in 1958, rehearsing a Monteverdi opera he had designed for the Aldeburgh Festival that year.
