FIVE QAJAR MOULDED FIGURAL POTTERY TILES
PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
Iran, mid to late 19th century

Comprising five rectangular compositional frieze tiles, all moulded and painted in shades of green, manganese purple, cobalt blue, and black against white ground, each tile framed in a deep, red-stained wooden frames, one tile depicting a Qajar Achaemenid-revival style scene with two noblemen standing upon a fallen man's body exchanging sashes in a manner reminiscient of the symbol of faravahar, relating to the notion of Zoroastrian divine power, khvarenah (the aureole of royalty and royal fortune), 28.9cm x 19.2cm; another depicting a nobleman bearing a green flag, riding his steed across a flower-filled landscape with buildings in the distance, 25.5cm x 18cm; and the final three tiles featuring falconers riding white steeds, their green-winged falcons perched on their outstretched arms, 25cm x 18cm, 24.7cm x 15.8cm, 25cm x 16.3cm; all measurements including frames.
