BRITISH INTEREST, 1860s -1880s

An album containing a collection of albumen prints (10), image sizes between 9.3 x8.4cm (smallest) and 11.5 x16cm (largest). Clarke, Miss Isabel Clarke and several group portraits of the Clarke family, mostly related to Mr. Charles Harwood Clarke (1820 -1894), Esq., B.A., F.S.A. He wrote 'Analysis of the waters from the deep wells of Westbourne Park and Russell square, and the Artesian well of the Hanwell lunatic asylum', in collaboration with Henry Medlock, Esq., F.C.S., published in 1854. Charles H. Clarke also collaborated with Charles Winston (1814-1864) in conducting several chemical experiments on glass-painting, which led improvement in the manufacture of coloured glass. Possibly, the prints in the album are the result of his experiments.. Together with two photographic reproductions of portraits miniatures of Mrs. and Rev. Harwood, ancestors of Charles Harwood Clarke. The album also includes a portrait of Henry Labouchere, First Baron Taunton (1798-1869), Secretary of State for the Colonies.
