In Northern China, the word for shoe xie formed a rebus expressing reciprocal understanding. The story of Ye Xian, similar to Cinderalla, tells of a young girl who was married to the King after it was discovered her foot fitted a tiny golden shoe. Historically, porcelain shoes, tokens of harmony between two people, were used as cups and were occasionally given as wedding presents in China.
