Bai Gengyan was a prominent Chinese painter and art educator, born in Chongqing, China in 1940. He was known for his modernist approach to traditional Chinese painting, which combined classical techniques with contemporary themes and styles. His interest in painting began at a young age, and he studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in the 1960s. He was influenced by the artistic movements of the time, including Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, and his paintings began to incorporate elements of these styles.

In the 1980s, Bai became a leading figure in the "New Wave" movement of Chinese art, which rejected the strictures of traditional Chinese painting in favor of more experimental approaches. He experimented with new materials, such as acrylic paint and mixed media, and his paintings often featured bold, abstract forms and vibrant colors. Bai's works are characterized by their expressive brushwork, dynamic compositions, and use of symbolism. He drew inspiration from a range of sources, including traditional Chinese culture, Western art, and contemporary life in China. His paintings often explored themes of identity, politics, and cultural exchange.

In addition to his artistic practice, Bai was a highly respected art educator. He taught at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute for over three decades, and his students included many of China's leading contemporary artists. He was known for his innovative teaching methods, which emphasized creative experimentation and individual expression.

Bai's contributions to Chinese art and culture have been widely recognized. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Painting Exhibition Gold Medal and the China Art Critics Association Award. His works are held in public and private collections around the world, including the National Art Museum of China and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
