James Atkinson (Surveyor)
“An Actuall Survey of Long Wall Sally Wall and Gallo Alis Gally Wall”, titled on the reverse: “Map Bermondsey 1696 of Long-Wall, Sally-Wall & Gally-Wall”, manuscript coloured survey map on 2 sheets of vellum, gilt, title cartouche with the surveyor’s name, compass rose, dividers marking scale in rods, some soiling, spotting and creasing, small tears to extremities without loss and minor splitting to fold marks, 60 x 84 cm, 1696.
***Tooley records a James Atkinson, mathematical instrument maker and maritime bookseller, whose shop was at Cherry Garden Stairs in Rotherhithe. He later joined with Seller, Thornton, Colson and Fisher in publishing an Atlas Maritimus, 1675-77. He was also a witness in the trial of Reverend Thomas Rosewell, a nonconformist minister in Rotherhithe, who was found guilty of treason but subsequently pardoned by King Charles II.
