Hawkesworth (John) a collection of 44 copper-engraved maps, views and plans, mostly from Hawkesworth’s “An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the order of His Present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow and the Endeavor”, 24 folding, including A Chart of the Straights of Magellan; From York Bay to Three Island Bay; A chart of Hawkins’s Maidenland Discovered by Sir Richard Hawkins in 1574 and Falkland Sound so called by Captain John Strong of the Farewell from London who sailed through it in 1689; A View of the N.W. side of Mas-A-Fuerra; A Chart and Views of Pitcairns Island, 1773; Queen Charlottes Islands, 1773; The North side of the largest of Queen Charlotte’s Islands as it appeared running along the shore to the Westward.; A Chart of Captn Casteret’s Discoveries at New Britain, with part of Captn Cooke’s Passage thro Endeavour Steights, and of Captn Dampier’s Tract and Discovieries in 1699 and 1700 at New Guinea and New Britain. A Draught of Bonthain Bay situated about 30 Leagues to the SE of Macassar in the Island of Celebes, 1772; A Chart of the SE part of Terra del Fuego including Strait le Maire and part of Stanten-Land by Lieutenant J. Cook 1769; Chart of the Island Otaheite, by Lieut. J. Cook, 1769; Chart of the Society Isles, discovered by Lieut. J. Cook 1769; A Chart of the Islands discovered in the Neighbourhood of Otaheite, in the Course of several Voyages round the World, made by the Capn Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Cook in the Years 165, 1767, 1769; River Thames and Mercury Bay in New Zealand, and others, some offsetting and marginal foxing, occasional repair to fold line on verso of maps, bookplate of the Scott Family, 4to, later calf, spine gilt, c.1773.

***Provenance. inscription on front free endpaper reads “Robert Scott 1798 to his brother W Scott”, who was the father of the novelist Sir Walter Scott.
