Born in Italy, de Simone studied at the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples. Norseman, designed by St. Clare J. Byrne and built by D. & W. Henderson & Co. in Glasgow in 1898, was constructed entirely of steel. She featured a distinctive barquentine rig on her three masts.
