Stuart Binding.- Ferreira Cardozo da Corta (Vicente Joze’)

Ms. in Portuguese on watermarked paper, including Letters to Sir Charles Stewart, dated 1811, Lisbon Gazette, dated Saturday Dec. 12th, ‘Comparison of Portuguese Government, following the Revolutions of 1620 & 1808’, author’s Observations, one replies given by Lisbon Government to Sir Charles Stewart in protest against execution of sentence of Officer Mascarenhas, ‘Supplication to the Prince Regent Oct. 21st 1810’, light age yellowing, contemporary calf ruled in gilt and featuring arms of Lord William Stuart, marbled endpapers. Rubbed and scuffed, 18th century.

Provenance. From the library of Lord William Stuart (1778–1814), naval commander. William Stuart, of Tempsford Hall in Bedfordshire and Aldenham Abbey in Hertfordshire, was the eldest son of William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh, and Sophia Margaret Juliana, daughter of Thomas Penn of Stoke Poges. He collected a large library part of which was sold at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge on the 17th June 1875, and a further portion at Christie, Manson & Wood's on 6th March 1895. The remainder of the library was destroyed by fire at Tempsford Hall not long after the sale. The Royal Library at Windsor has many books that belonged to Lord Stuart de Rothesay and to William Stuart.
