A DAMASCUS POTTERY TILE WITH CENTRAL VEGETAL MEDALLION
Ottoman Syria, 17th - 18th century

Of near-square shape, underglaze-painted in cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and black on a white ground, a cusped vegetal medallion in the centre featuring rosettes, carnations and tulips blossoming from a small vase, the medallion sitting within a wreath of saz leaves, and small rosette sprays to each corner, mounted on a stepped wooden frame, the back of the frame lined with dark marbling of red, brown, black and gold inks, 26.5cm x 25.9cm.
