FOLLOWER OF THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH Portrait of an Infantry Officer oil on canvas 30 x 24 7/8 in. (76.2 x 63.7 cm.) The sitter wears the uniform of an infantry officer, as shown by the gorget worn around his neck, probably of the 32nd Regiment of Foot. He is depicted as being 'on duty' wearing his sash and the gorget, both of which items would be laid aside when in society or on non-duty occasions. We are grateful to Andrew Cormack, PhD FSA, FRHistS (www.andrewcormack.com) for his assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
