Worked as an emaciated wolf exposing fangs in a ferocious grin, with a piercing glare of his bone-inlaid eyes, his right paw resting on a human skull, the himotoshi channel through the eye sockets,

A wolf with a skull is a popular netsuke motif of the period, leaving bodies of criminals in the open to be devoured by wolves was a common practice of the period at Kozukappara and other execution grounds near Edo (present day Tokyo).
