The dramatic tension between two Immortals is underscored by an intriguing story. The tale Journey to the West tells tells of how he was greatly attracted to the courtesan Bai Mudan. Despite his passion for her he would not give himself fully to Bai. In frustration, she sought the aid of He Xiangu who taught her special techniques of seduction, and through these she was able to successfully seduce him and steal his immortal essence, thereby aiding her self-cultivation and quest to herself become Immortal.
