Viscount Kirkwall (Earl of Orkney) – London circa 1870, retailed by Messrs Jones
A cased Victorian unmarked gold and guilloche enamel seal

The bulbous terminal chased with foliage, the lobed inverted baluster stem with cut herringbone pattern topped with translucent Royal blue enamel. The chalcedony seal intaglio cut with V K in gothic script below a Viscounts coronet. Housed in a fitted original case, branded for Messrs Jones of 46 Pall Mall London and 18 East Street Brighton.

Length (seal) – 6.1 cm / 2.4 inches

Gross weight – 24 grams

George William Hamilton FitzMaurice, 6th Earl of Orkney (1827-1889), to his second wife

Amelia FitzMaurice née Samuel, Countess of Orkney (1813-1890), to her son by her first marriage

Baron Arthur Denis Samuel de Vahl (1837-1918), to his daughter

Maud de Vahl (1870-1920), to her daughter

Henrietta de Vahl Currey (1904-1978), thence by descent.

The initials and coronet are for Viscount Kirkwall (Earl of Orkney)

For George William Hamilton FitzMaurice, 6th Earl of Orkney (1827-1889), styled as Viscount Kirkwall until 1877, he married his second wife Amelia Samuels (1813-1890), the widow of Baron Denis Moses Samuel (1782-1860), on the 28th Nov 1872, with no issue.

George FitzMaurice was the son of Thomas FitzMaurice, 5th Earl of Orkney (1803-1827) and the Hon. Charlotte Irby (1807-1883). He joined the 71st Highlanders Regiment as a Captain from the 92nd Regiment in 1853 and saw action in the Crimea in 1855. He transferred to the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1856 and retired in 1857.
