A George II sterling silver sauceboat, London 1758 by Edward Wakelin (reg. 17th Nov 1747)
of plain bellied form with an overturned and scroll rear, the C scroll handle with leaf form thumbpiece. Raised on three scroll legs with spayed shell feet and leaf junctions. Engraved with a crest of a lion rampant underneath spout. Fully marked underneath and with later French control mark.
Length – 18.5 cm / 7.25 inches
Weight – 494 grams / 15.88 ozt
In 1757 the Wakelin ledgers record “a pair of leaf sauceboats … 48ozs 1dwt @ 10/6d …£25 4s 6d” that were made for the Countess of Exeter (illustrated: Barr, E., (1980) George Wickes Royal Goldsmith 1698-1761, P. 109)
