A PORTRAIT OF A LADY OF THE COURT
Jaipur, Rajasthan, North-Western India, late 19th - 20th century
Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, the vertical composition portraying a lady of the court seated on a yellow floor spread against a large bolster, holding in both hands stems with tiny white flowers, wearing a diaphanous shawl around her shoulders and on her head, and several strings of pearls and bejwelled necklaces on her neck, the inspiration for the portrait possibly drawn from illustrations of Padmini Nayika in Rajasthani schools of painting, set within black and blue rules, and mounted on a white cardboard frame, 23.5cm x 16cm excluding the mount.
