A SARDONYX CAMEO CARVED PORTRAIT RELIEF OF MUGHAL EMPEROR SHAH JAHAN (REIGNED 1628-58) WITHIN A GOLD AND SAPPHIRE MOUNT depicted facing left, wearing elaborate turban with pearls, tunic and jewels, mounted within a gold oval frame with four lugs each set with three sapphires, the 18K gold with small loop above, hallmarked for Gustav Dahlgren & Co, Malmö, Sweden, 1927, 5cm high overall The design for this portrait derives from a series of known 17th century cameo portraits of Shah Jahan, which themselves were presumably based on a contemporary Mughal painting. Some experts have speculated that these contemporary cameos were produced by Europeans working in the Mughal court. An example dating from circa 1630-40 is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Inv No. IS.14-1974.
